The Ups And Downs Of Erectile Dysfunction By www.menhealthonline.biz
Although erectile dysfunction is more common in older men, the problem can occur at any age. Formerly called impotence, erectile dysfunction was once a taboo subject. It's now known that erectile dysfunction is more often caused by physical problems than by psychological ones, and that many men have normal erections into their 80s. Now that last phrase, after the comma, is important. Just about the time you threw in the towel, figuring your sex life after age 50 was going to be strictly in your head, medical research and Big Pharma saved the day. Now, getting it up, at any age, can be as easy as taking a pill. I started having the problem in my late 40's. Talk about frustration. Here's a guy who could get it up and keep it up, at a moments notice most of his teenage and pre mid-life years What an irritating and frustrating experience to have, especially at a relatively young age, and there didn't seem to be anything that could be done about it. Let's face it, an erection is part of the male ID. Being able to get one when its needed, has always been part of who we are; it's our ego bared to its essence. But when it just lays there, soft and disinterested, when there's heavy breathing going on, the ego, indeed the entire person, takes a major hit. The Causes Are Many But now we learn that it can be a lot more serious than a damaged ego. Although it can be embarrassing to talk with your doctor about sexual issues, seeking help for erectile dysfunction can be worth the effort. Sometimes erectile dysfunction is caused by an underlying condition such as heart disease. And there are other causes, such as: - Excessive alcohol, tobacco and/or drug use
- Fatigue
- Brain or spinal-cord injuries
- Hypogonadism (which leads to lower testosterone levels)
- Liver or kidney failure
- Multiple sclerosis
- Parkinson's disease
- Radiation therapy to the testicles
- Stroke
- Some types of prostate or bladder surgery
- Wife and/or girl friend problems
But probably THE biggest cause today of erectile dysfunction, is Type 2 diabetes. Surprised? You shouldn't be. Diabetes, in epidemic proportions, has quietly swept over this nation to the tune of 17 million reported cases, and many more millions of people who have it and don't know it ( I fell into the latter category). TIP: If you have a large belly and are overweight, and have been for nine months to a year or longer, like it or not, there's a good chance you have it. Talk to your Doc about it. Don't put it off. Diabetes is nothing to trifle with. It can silently sneak up on you, and with no warning, cause a stroke, heart attack or some other unpleasant and potentially fatal condition. But don't be afraid of it. It can be controlled with a combination of diet and pills. Unless you have it real bad, as in Type 1 diabetes. Now you're looking at insulin injections twice a day (you do it). But even that can be managed. The needles available today are sharp and thin, you'll barely notice the injection. Beats hell out of a stroke. The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) sponsors programs aimed at understanding the causes of erectile dysfunction and finding treatments to reverse its effects. Three in Erections Earlier, I made the broad statement that solving 'the problem' can be as simple as taking a pill. Yes, it can. Unfortunately, like most things in life, the pill doesn't always work. But let's give credit where credit is due. Viagra, Cialis, and Levitra all work in varying degrees for most men who take them. The downside is, they must be prescribed by a doctor (they are drugs, after all), usually cost $10 or more per pill, are not covered by insurance, and the potential side effects can be serious. (I'm sure there are exceptions to the $10 cost on the Internet, and its only a matter of time until health insurance companies are pressured into paying for them). But even after 10 years on the market, costs for the Big 3 have not come down much, although generic versions are available for about one third the cost. But taking a prescribed drug to solve an erection problem is not the only effective method available. There are so called 'natural' solutions available at substantially lower costs. These are pills, capsules, powders, and other dispensing techniques (like under the tongue instant dissolving paper thin lozenges) that can be purchased like vitamins. The problem here is, every supplement company in the world (and there must be a zillion of them...the market is huge) has its own brand of 'natural', no prescription needed pill or potion. Most of them don't work (at least the eighteen or so I tried didn't), but how many guys take the time to send them back for a refund? My guess is not many, including me. You Spends Your Money and You Takes Your Chances So in the 'natural' erection pill market, it's buyer beware, trial and error, and if you find one that works, hang on to the address and hope they stay in business longer than two years. I found a company that makes not one but three erection products. They all work in varying degrees, and they're all relatively inexpensive. And here's the kicker: they offer a 90-day no questions asked money back guarantee. This stuff better work if you're giving guys 90 days to send it back. And it does! One product has been sold to more than 2 million men worldwide. One final note. Besides the erection pills, there's at least one other approach that seems to work, and that's exercise, specifically weight lifting. Lifting weights increases the body's supply of testosterone. Low testosterone levels are common in older men. It's a natural part of aging. It also contributes a lot to the erectile dysfunction problem. If you can afford it, grab a YMCA membership (Medicare will pay for it if you're old enough) and work out two or three times a week. Nothing major...you're not trying to become Mr. Universe. Twenty minutes per session (if you don't break a sweat, you're kidding yourself and just wasting time) followed by three laps in the pool, two or three times a week, and watch your sex life improve dramatically (assuming no other hindrances). I hope there's something here you can use. Good luck! Wes Nathan is a truck driver/writer/Internet marketer from Oklahoma who often writes about health issues.
